HOW TO REACH GAMKARAB: From Windhoek, drive to Otjiwarongo and from there to Outjo. Driver through Outjo on the Okaukuejo road and at the crossing ± 500m north of Outjo, turn right on the Otavi C39 road. As soon as you hit the dirt road, check your odometer -  drive straight for ± 32 km and you will find us on the left-hand side of the road.
Farm Gamkarab – Bushman for “Water Hole” is situated in the thorn-bush savanna just south of the Neins mountain-range. This historic farm hosted a group of Dorslandtrekkers who, found here, at Gamkarab, a place to settle before being placed out to other destinations. The main reason for setting aside this piece of land for the Dorslandtrekker settlement, was because of Gamkarab cave providing the only drinking water in this vast area.
Today only ruins and a small cemetery, hosting 14 graves, still stand witness to the former Dorslandtrekkers presence on Gamkarab. Gamkarab is rich in History. The Bushmen shared this water hole with leopards, snakes and hundreds of bats. After settlement of the Dorslandtrekkers on the farm, the bats were – in a natural way disposed off. A tunnel was built and sealed to conserved only drinking water.

The Bushman and other tribes had a ritual entering the cave to fetch water in their ostrich eggshells and calabashes. Being a steep climb down a damp and dark tunnel amidst flying, squeaking bats for 41 meters to the water surface, they always entered the cave one after another, the second climber holding a burning wooden torch. Along the way, parts of burning coal rained down on the poor fellow below. They never dared wipe any of this burning coal off their bodies, as this would have caused the “gods” to get angry. On reaching the water surface they had to greet the “gods” by saying with arms folded across their breasts – “Gamkarab, I came”. Rustic self-catering rooms, reminiscent of the surroundings, or camping under the starry skies within our unique camp sites will be home to you during your stay at Gamkarab. Wake up to the sounds of an African farm and another exiting day will begin! Our establishment is self-catering, certain meals can be catered for if by prior arrangement. Fire wood is available!

For exploring the cave, visitors are advised to dress in old clothes, shoes with a tight grip, a towel, toiletries and clean clothes for a shower afterwards. Remember your camera – where else will you be able to photograph a millipede fossil surrounded by stalagmites and stalactites? Suntan lotion, walking shoes, headgear and light clothing are recommended for the horseback-riders and hiking enthusiasts.
