In 1852, it was decided to establish a town on the banks of the Klein Brak River. A site for Middelburg was chosen, as its name implies, in the very centre of a circle of other platteland towns, namely Graaff-Reinet, Cradock and Colesberg. There is a museum of local history which boasts a fine collection of rifles. Visit the market square where you can find the old Water pump, a gift from Queen Victoria in 1887, and the Wall of Remembrance in memory of all who fell during the Anglo-Boer War, the two World Wars and the bush war in Namibia. The Burger Monument was erected in 1929 to honour the burgers who died in the Anglo-Boer War. Just outside the town there is the Grootfontein Agricultural Development Institute and College, originally established by the British Army as a military peace-keeping camp after the Anglo-Boer War. Today Middelburg is the centre of a sheep farming area and it’s motto ‘Cedant Arma Aretro’ invites the exchange of swords for ploughshares.

The Karoo Country Inn, built in 1853, is a beautifully restored Cape Victorian hotel that takes you back to those frontier days. The ambience inside the hotel is perfectly matched to the ‘big sky’ African landscape outside. A traditional English breakfast buffet is served each morning. Room service is available on request. Saddles Steak Ranch is situated on the Inn’s premises. Enjoy steak, seafood & chicken dishes, burgers, pizza and much more.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation consists of 23 luxury air-conditioned en-suite rooms. A fully equipped conference centre that can accommodate 60 delegates is situated on the premises. DSTV, swimming pool, secured parking and 24 hour security are also provided. Electric blankets are available. Dinner can be enjoyed at the Saddles Steak Ranch, situated on the premises. Trading hours are from 09:00 - 22:00. Monday - Sunday.
